Garrison School: Democracy, Equity, and Justice Where Do We Go From Here?
Democracy Equity and Justice Symposium
Purpose & Overview:
The Garrison School Museum, in its mission to educate, engage, and empower the public through the preservation and celebration of African American history, proposes a timely and urgent community symposium entitled “Democracy, Equity, and Justice: Where Do We Go From Here?”
In a moment where divisions are deep and trust in democratic institutions is strained, this symposium will explore how democracy, equity, and justice are inextricably linked—and how individuals, institutions, and communities can work together to create real, sustainable change.
This interactive forum will feature leading voices from across the region, whose lived experiences and leadership inform the struggle for inclusion, fairness, and truth in public life. Through panel discussions and guided table conversations, attendees will leave not just informed, but inspired to be active participants in shaping a more just and equitable society.
Symposium Objectives:
- Connect historical and current movements for justice, equity, and democratic participation.
- Highlight real-world examples of policy, advocacy, and reconciliation in action.
- Empower individuals with practical tools and pathways for civic and social engagement.
- Foster inclusive curriculum development for K–12 youth that reflects diverse histories, voices, and experiences to become informed, empathetic, and active participants in a democratic society.
- Foster dialogue across race, faith, and political perspectives in a spirit of shared humanity and learning.
