SUMMARY:KCMC Lecture Series: Thavolia Glymph
DESCRIPTION:Many writers and artists have focused on the overwhelming total loss of life during the Civil War — an estimated 1.5 million casualties of all ages\, ethnicities\, and genders. Less visible and documented is the conflict’s specific impact on Black women and children. \nHistorian Thavolia Glymph draws on her research\, centered on slavery\, emancipation\, Reconstruction\, labor\, and women in the U.S. South\, to discuss what’s been overlooked in contemporary and historical accounts. \nA professor of history and law at Duke University\, Glymph is the author of two books\, including The Women’s Fight: The Civil War’s Battles for Home\, Freedom\, and Nation. She’s published numerous articles and essays and served as co-editor of two volumes of Freedom: A Documentary History of Emancipation\, 1861-1867. \nGlymph is also the past president of the American Historical Association and the Southern Historical Association\, and an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. \nRSVP Here

SUMMARY:KCMC Being Human Historic Bus Tours
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Routes of Resistance: Black & Indigenous Histories of Kansas City Bus Tours \nThe Kansas City Monuments Coalition has partnered with the National Humanities Center and the Being Human Festival to sponsor two FREE bus tours of historic sites in the Kansas City metro area. \nThe first tour option focuses on Black education in Kansas City. Guests will visit the Garrison School in Liberty\, the Banneker School in Parkville\, and the site of Western University near the Quindaro townsite to learn about how these institutions shaped Black education in the region. In this tour\, we will center Black schools as locations of resistance to structural racism and marginalization in the United States and explore the legacies of desegregation. \nThe second tour option explores Indigenous history in the area. The bus will visit the Alexander Majors house and meet with presenters from Fort Osage\, visit the Nerman Museum at Johnson County Community College to view the “Trespassers Beware!” Exhibit\, and finally visit the Wyandot Burying Ground for a presentation by Chief Judith Manthe of the Wyandot Nation of Kansas. We will explore the themes of settler colonialism\, resistance\, and belonging through these sites. \nBoth tours will start at the Black Archives of Mid-America and end at the Mutual Musicians Foundation in the historic 18th and Vine District for live jazz music and refreshments! \nLunch will be provided for both bus tours. \nRegistration is currently open for both tours. If you would like to join\, please sign up each individual attendee. \nFor the Black Education Tour: https://tinyurl.com/4wuzdanv  \nFor the Indigenous Histories Tour: https://tinyurl.com/5n7nes8e
